Every voice engine has a showcase reel, and every showcase reel sounds remarkable. Curated lines, forgiving pacing, a script written to flatter the model. That tells you almost nothing about what happens when you drop in forty minutes of your own writing.
The seams show up later. A strange flatness by minute six. Emphasis landing on the wrong word in a sentence that mattered. Breath placed where no one breathes. None of it shows up in a fifteen-second clip. All of it shows up in the thing you actually publish.
So we stopped trusting the demo. We started listening to the whole take instead, the same way your audience will.
Pitch accuracy is table stakes now. What separates a voice worth using from one worth skipping is quieter than that: how it handles a comma, whether it breathes like a person mid-sentence, whether the emotional register holds across a long paragraph instead of resetting to neutral every few seconds.
The best synthetic voice is the one you stop noticing is synthetic.
That's the bar. Not "does it sound human" in a ten-second sample, but "did I forget to keep checking" by the third minute. Very few tools clear it. The ones that do earn a place in our guides.
